The Case for Advertising in Interactive Digital Magazines

This survey claims to be the first study exclusively conducted on readers of interactive digital magazine readers (as opposed to readers of print magazines replicas. The results happily seem to bear out what I’ve always believed about interactive magazines properly engaging readers more effectively than PDF magazine replicas are capable of.

Adobe Throws in Towel by Stopping iPhone Development

It looks like Apple has finally won its battle to keep Adobe Flash off the iPad and iPhone platforms. Having recently modified it’s SDK license to effectively outlaw Adobe’s Packager cross-platform compiler, Adobe has announced it will cease developing this particular tool.

As a developer I’m disappointed and particularly pissed at Apple. I thought they were better than this. Welcome back to the dark days. Ceros on iPad concept

Grazia goes 3D (-ish)

The latest issue of glossy women’s magazine Grazia claims to offer readers a 360-degree view of the latest spring fashion trends. In reality these 360-degree experiences are nothing more than pre-recorded videos of rotating products. Not strictly the all-singing, all-dancing 3D extravaganza I was led to expect, but nonetheless a brave experiment.

It is mildly satisfying  when you scan the AR codes that appear on pages within the magazine to launch your ‘3D ‘ online content. But the resultant experience is far from satisfying. The technology is still largely unrefined, very clunky and therefore didn’t work too well.

I spent far more time than I’d cared to furiously waving my copy of Grazia at my computer whilst 3D objects sat on screen like confused puppies trying to decipher my desperate actions. A small chuckle passed my lips as I imagined Grazia’s core audience grappling manfully with this technology when they’d rather just be reading.

Virtual hats off to publisher Bauer though for getting with the programme and for trying something new. Something for us all to learn from and to take forward.
